Hyrna

Since the color of this yarn is a little muted/muddy, I've decided a shawl with lots of open areas is the best option. Having solid areas only makes it more obvious that the colors don't pop on this baby. The pattern is "Hyrna" from the book Three-Cornered & Long Shawls by Sigridur Halldorsdottir. I'm knitting on US 4 nedles and this shawl starts at the back of the neck and growns outwards like wings (similiar to Evelyn Clark triangle type shawls). It's not a huge shawl so I'm sure I have plenty to knit this. The book is a little unusual in that the charts are all hand written. There is a supplimental booklet in English explaining techniques and an English stitch key so it's been OK to knit so far. I have no idea why I keep picking patterns that are not in English as I don't speak any other language. Maybe something from the Estonian lace book next :-)

Really cool! I have a few non english patts as well. I just need to find a translator online...

Dear hattie,

Knitting Fool is a good site for some translations of stitch symbols

I used to find knitting patterns in other languages daunting, but now I just try to figure them out anyway and keep on knitting :-) Glad I'm not the only one!

Dear Cat,

Thank you! I hope it works out. I tried a different pattern before this one and the solid areas of knitting looked so bad that I was convinced it would be better to scrap that and start new. Looking at this one, I'm glad I did. This pattern is a little different from some other lace that I've knit in the way the lace is constructed, but once you get the hang of it I would agree that it is pretty fun :-)

Dear Tracy,

Glad you think it looks good. It sure looks better than what I tried the first time! I'm finding it interesting to see just how the hand spun yarns are looking done up in lace. Some give better results than others for certain styles of lace work I'm finding.
