Got Yarn?

4 ounces of lace weight yarn. Doesn't look like much does it? I plied the Polworth and I imagine I have enough for a smallish project. Should I try to figure out how much I actually have or just throw myself into a project and pray? And what to make? I plan to decide this weekend when I swatch. Size US 3 or higher I think. It will fluf when washed. What happened to the merino/tencel you ask? I tried to spin it thin and I hated spinning with it. There have only been a hand full of things I loath to spin. I disliked spinning un-cut baby camel (yarn felt waxy), really don't like mohair or bunny rabbit (had to take allergy medication) and now I can add tencel to the list. Though it looks a little like silk, it doesn't act like silk and felt listless, almost brittle in my hands. I will try to spin the merino/tencel thicker for knitting other things but if I still hate it, I will see how my sister likes it since she uses spindles to spin more than the wheel. I'll be back once I figure out what to knit with this stuff :-)

What a GORGEOUS color. I think you should find out what you've got first. You could have 600 yards, you could have 800. I'd rather have a good estimate, it opens up your options. :)

That yarn is gorgeous! I love the color! Have fun deciding what to make. I'm looking forward to seeing the results.

Your pictures make me what to get my wheel spinning. I use a fishing line counter to figure my yardage. When I wind it in a ball, I let it run through the counter. It measures in ft, but that is no problem. This is a great tool and it costs less than $15 at your local fish/hunting store.

Dear Hattie,

I know I have more than 800 yards for sure since I can kind of tell after all these years of spinning. I also have one of those devices to measure the yarn though I have never used it. Maybe it's time to break it out and see what I have. Thanks for your opinion. It always helps to hear from someone else :-)

Dear Kirsten,

Thank you! I think the color is great too. I have a pattern in mind but I I think I have to agree with Hattie and Kay about trying to figure out how much yarn I have. It would suck to run out because there is no more to be had!

Dear Kay,

I had no idea there was such a thing available for people who fish! I actually have a counter that I was given as a gift that I have never used so I'm going to sit down this weekend and measure. I will keep this in mind though, because it's much less costly than what I was given and other people will be really interested! Thank you for that information :-)

Great looking stuff. I'm sure whatever you make will be lovely.

Dear Tracy,

Thank you! I think I'm going to try "Hyrna" from Sigridur Halldorsdottir's book "Three Cornered and Long Shawls". The pattern is only 126 rows long and I want to try knitting from her charts which are hand written :-)
